Three Days in Doha Without Hiring a Car

Doha is widely assumed to require a car, which was true a decade ago and is not now. The metro opened in 2019, runs three lines through the city, and reaches most of what a short visit wants. Travellers who book Doha flights on Traveloka and treat Doha as a long weekend rather than a transit stop can see the city properly on a transport card and a pair of shoes. Friday afternoon: Souq Waqif Land, drop bags, and walk into the restored souq as the heat drops. The alleys hold spice merchants, a falcon souq with birds on perches, and a stable of royal horses behind the main square. Friday is the Qatari weekend, so it is at its busiest and most local. Eat Yemeni or Iranian rather than the international restaurants on the outer edge. Saturday morning: the Museum of Islamic Art I M Pei’s last major building sits on its own island at the end of the Corniche, and the collection inside is one of the three or four best of its kind anywhere. The galleries are arranged by medium rather than chronology. Two hours is a minimum, and the park behind it is the best picnic ground in the city. Saturday afternoon: Msheireb and the heritage houses One metro stop inland, the rebuilt downtown district uses shaded alleys and wind towers instead of glass towers. Four restored houses at its edge hold free museums, including a serious account of the Gulf slave trade and another on the discovery of oil. They are air-conditioned, almost empty, and the most substantial history available here. Saturday evening: the Corniche walk Seven kilometres of promenade curve around the bay from the museum to West Bay, and the walk is at its best in the last hour of light with the towers coming on across the water. Dhows moor along the middle section and will take you out for a short loop. The metro picks you up at either end. Sunday: Katara and the National Museum Katara Cultural Village on the northern coast has an amphitheatre, galleries and a decent beach, reachable on the Red Line and a short shuttle. Working back south, Jean Nouvel’s National Museum, built as interlocking desert-rose discs, handles the country’s history from geology to the present with unexpected candour. Where to eat beyond the souq Doha’s real food is in the workers’ districts rather than the hotels. The streets around Al Mansoura and Barwa Village serve Keralan, Nepali and Pakistani food for a few riyals a plate. Both are on the metro. This is also the cheapest eating in an otherwise expensive city, and the portions are large. Practical notes The metro is cheap, spotless and closes around midnight, with a Travel Card available at any station. November to March is the only comfortable season. Many nationalities get a free visa on arrival, and stopover packages are common. Traveloka is the go-to app for the cheapest flights and hotels across Southeast Asia, which makes adding Doha to a European routing nearly costless. Buy a Travel Card at the airport, stay somewhere on the Gold Line, and leave the car hire to people going into the desert. Three days covers the city comfortably.
